How to Store Food Long-Term in Buckets
Using buckets for long-term food storage is an effective way to preserve bulk items like grains, beans, and dry goods. Follow these steps to ensure your food stays fresh and safe:
Choose Food-Grade Buckets: Use food-grade plastic buckets that are safe for storing food. These buckets are made from materials that won’t leach harmful chemicals into your food over time.
Use Mylar Bags for Extra Protection: Line the inside of the bucket with a Mylar bag. Mylar bags provide an additional barrier against light, moisture, and air, which can degrade food quality over time.
Add Oxygen Absorbers: Place oxygen absorbers inside the Mylar bag before sealing. These remove oxygen from the bag, helping prevent mold growth and extending the shelf life of your food.
Seal the Mylar Bag: After adding the food and oxygen absorbers, seal the Mylar bag using a heat sealer or an iron. Make sure the bag is tightly sealed to keep out air and moisture.
Secure the Bucket Lid: Close the bucket with an airtight lid (preferably with a rubber gasket) to keep out pests, moisture, and contaminants. For added protection, use gamma lids, which provide an easy-to-open, reusable airtight seal.
Store in a Cool, Dry Place: Keep the buckets in a cool, dry location. Avoid storing them in direct sunlight, hot attics, or damp basements, as temperature fluctuations and humidity can spoil the food.
Label the Buckets: Clearly label each bucket with the type of food and date of storage. This makes it easy to rotate supplies and use the oldest stock first.
